Student Testimonial - Kaleb Prabakaran
My name is Kaleb Prabakaran and 24 years old and comes from Denmark. I went to China because of a student internship. During the stay, I was trained for 3 months by David D.
I will start by an introducing my background into Martial Arts. I have been involved in Martial Arts since I was a kid because I possessed the passion for Martial Arts and loved to fight. Boxing was the first Martial Art I have been taught during my childhood and has been trained by my father, who is an experienced boxer. I also practiced Karate but I did not find the passion for it. Before Wing Chun I trained Russian Systema. In addition to Martial Arts I have also practiced different sports.
Before I went to China, I was researching what Wing Chun school I should attend during my stay in China. David D. did not take any students at that time because he wants time to teach each student. I like that mindset and took the chance to email David about my situation which he replied. Other Wing Chun schools did not respond to my emails at all.
The first time I met David I wanted to fight him. I thought I could easily beat this person. However, it did not take long before I knew that he is strong and he was playing with me as if I were a toy. After this experience, I wanted to be trained by David and learn what he knew and could do. I appreciate that David started out by explaining the way he taught and what standards he had and from that point I knew we had the same high standards. One of the most important thing in order to be better in Martial Arts is to find the correct teacher. A teacher that can explain the students the correct technical aspects and making it easy to understand. Based on my experience, David D. an instructor that live up to these criteria. David excels in his work as a professional trainer, where he by coaching explains things in an understandable manner. It does not matter if you do not understand in the first time he will gladly explain it again until you understand it. Normally, I am a person that asks questions about everything that I do not understand. Wing Chun is complex and thus I was always asking David many questions for every practice because of David’s passion of Wing Chun where he always take time to answer my question until I understand it. The Wing Chun that David teaches is most tailored to western students that do not understand Chinese culture. David is good at explaining the correct understanding of Chinese terms like Siu Nim Tao.
One of the thing I miss most is when the class was over we eat together. It was a great opportunity to ask question about Wing Chun and discuss it. Moreover, it was a great way to get to know the other students.
In my opinion, the teaching of Wing Chun by David is more adept for the people that had already learned other Martials Arts (professionals) since it is more advanced than the other Wing Chun styles. This Wing Chun style is where you slowly progress by having to learn all the fundamentals, human body (muscle and bones), and philosophy before you can get involved with the other students. Based on my personal experience, it could be confusing in the beginning and it was hard to keep the passion and discipline because it took a long time to progress to the “fun stuff” where I can learn how to kick, push or drop a person. After two months, I starts to understand why David D. wants to take the “development” of my Wing Chun slowly because he wants me to learn the fundamentals and erase the other Martials Arts that I had learned. This is in comparison to many other Martials Arts is where you begin to learn examples how to kick and throw some pushes – but also where it ends.
Wing Chun has made me a better fighter but has also influence in my private life by setting higher standards and enforce stronger discipline. David always tells us to stay calm even if we get nervous, fearful or when the adrenalin is rising. When I am going to a test I always get nervous but after being taught Wing Chun I always tell myself to stay calm and that works great. Moreover, if I get angry I can control my anger by staying calm. The teaching of Wing Chun by David does not only help to be better to fight but it also changes your personal life.
It is an honor to be a student of David D.
